Most news clients are quite similar in subscribing to newsgroups. Basically, you need to download the group list of all newsgroups available.

Process for finding and subscribing to Newsgroups

  1. Download List of all available groups
  2. Search and Subscribe to the groups you are interested in
  3. Download Newsgroup Headers and browse articles

In this section I demonstrate how to subscribe to Newsgroups using Microsoft Outlook Express.

Step One: After installing Outlook Express, you will be prompted to download
newsgroup listings. Click Yes.

If you are returning to Outlook from an earlier install, Click Newsgroups, (located in the left pane window). Then, click the Newsgroups button.

Otherwise, skip to Step Two.

Step Two: Outlook will now start to download newsgroup listings.

Step Three: A Newsgroup Subscriptions Box will open. You can scroll through the available newsgroups or manually use the search box to limit your search to a particular term or terms.

Step Four: For this example, I am interested in newsgroups related to Ubuntu Linux. I use the form field, and type ubuntu. It looks like there is only one newsgroup related to ubuntu. I highlight the newsgroup and select subscribe. Rinse and repeat for all other newsgroups you'd like to add.

Step Five: In the main newsgroups window, my subscribed newsgroups are now listed.

Step Six: Double click the newsgroup you want to view articles for in the main display window, Outlook Express will download the headers for that particular newsgroup.

Giganews makes a really cool, free "Download Accelerator", which makes downloading headers up to 10x faster. In order to successfully use the Download Accelerator, you must use Giganews. Click here for more info.
