Spam across different communication methods such as forums, email, blogs, and Usenet generally carries a negative connotation. For the most part spam, or unsolicited requests for goods and services, is a bad thing.

When is Spam acceptable?
What essentially is spam to one person might be a welcome advertisement to others. For instance, if you look at the newsgroup alt.guitars.amps, some users might discuss the fair trade of guitar amplifiers, and post messages selling equipment. Is this considered spam?

No. In this case the spam post for guitar amplifiers would not be considered spam. Remember, commercial messages are sometimes allowed, but use your best judgment. It is paramount to read the newsgroup charter of the newsgroup you'd like to place a post in, before posting.
