To explain header compression, we first need to explain what a header is. In regards to Usenet Articles, a header is the subject, from, and to lines of an article (among other technical information).

When you load up new newsgroups in your news client, the news client loads all of the headers for articles in the newsgroup. If there are thousands of articles in a newsgroup, it will take quite some time to download all of the headers.

Because headers contain a lot of repeat information like say for example the text string “Subject:” there is a lot of duplicate data which is downloaded when you load headers into your newsgroups.

Usenet provider Giganews, has developed an application which basically compresses this data so that pretty much only the unique data is downloaded. This can speed up header downloads by 6 to 10 times faster than normal.

The Giganews application is called “Giganews Accelerator”. The only thing to think about when deciding whether or not you want to use the Giganews Accelerator is that it only works with the Giganews service. If you want faster header downloads you’ll have to use the Giganews Accelerator in combination with the Giganews Usenet access service.
